Apron Visual Aids

Overview

The Apron Visual Aids course explores the visual aids commonly found on the airport apron.

It will enable you to identify and accurately interpret the markings, signs, lighting, and other visual aids found on the apron, including at aircraft stands, on apron taxiways and taxilanes, and on apron service roads.

The knowledge gained from this course is essential to safe manoeuvring on the apron.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain how visual aids contribute to airside and apron safety in normal and low visibility conditions.
  • Identify and accurately interpret the meaning of key apron:
    • Markings
    • Signs
    • Lighting
    • Markers
  • Recognize the markings, signs, lighting, and other aids used to identify unserviceable areas, works areas, and obstructions.
  • Identify the key visual aids that indicate they have inadvertently entered the manoeuvring area and the actions to take should this occur.

  • All airport, airport stakeholder, and service provider personnel who are required to operate on the apron.
  • Airport managers, supervisors, or team members with operations or safety responsibilities.
  • Personnel responsible for training and facilitating airside operational staff.

Introduction to Aerodrome Visual Aids

  • The complex airside environment at airports.
  • The importance of visual aids in enabling safe and efficient operations.
  • Key ICAO and ACI guidance material / reference documents.

Apron Visual Aids – Overview

  • The challenges associated with operating on the apron.
  • Key elements of the apron.
  • ICAO requirements and ACI recommendations for apron visual aids.

Apron Markings for Aircraft

  • Markings designed to aid the safe manoeuvring of aircraft:
    • On apron taxiways and taxilanes.
    • At aircraft stands.

Apron Markings for Vehicles

  • Markings designed to aid the safe manoeuvring of vehicles:
    • On apron taxiways and taxilanes.
    • On apron service roads.

Apron Signs

  • Key signs found on the apron and how they aid the safe and efficient manoeuvring of aircraft and vehicles.

Apron Lighting

  • The lights found on the apron and the purpose they serve.

Other Visual Aids

  • Key markers commonly found on the apron.
  • The visual aids used to identify unserviceable/restricted use areas and obstructions.

Closing Thoughts

  • The importance of familiarizing yourself with the specific visual aids used at your airport.
  • The key visual aids that indicate you have inadvertently entered the manoeuvring area.

 Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
