Airport Irregular Operations (IROPS)

Overview

Welcome to the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Irregular Operations (IROPS) course.

This course provides participants with an introduction to irregular operations (IROPS) events.

It will define and discuss IROPS situations and explore the impact of IROPS events on airports and the broader Air Transportation System (ATS).

Participants will learn how airports can effectively plan for and improve their response to IROPS events and positively impact the different stakeholders in the ATS through a coordinated, holistic IROPS planning process.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe IROPS events, understand what causes them and how they impact airports and other stakeholders of the Air Transport System (ATS).
  • Understand how IROPS events differ from normal operations and emergency operations.
  • Understand the dependencies that exist among various stakeholders during IROPS events and how airports can take the lead in connecting stakeholders to improve overall industry IROPS response efforts.
  • Discover the means to develop holistic solutions in order for an airport to mitigate the effects of IROPS events and provide uniform customer care during IROPS events.
  • Describe how an airport can prepare in advance for all stages of an IROPS event.
  • Consider future systems approaches such as airport-wide collaborative decision making (A-CDM)

Who Should Enrol?

  • All Airport Operations personnel including airside, terminal and landside staff
  • Airport managers, supervisors or team members with operations, safety or customer experience responsibilities
  • All airport stakeholders that provide services to airport customers including airlines, ground handlers and concessionaires.
  • Anyone interested in a career in airport operations

Course Content

The ACI Airport Irregular Operations (IROPS) course covers the following topics:

Introduction

Highlights key IROPS definitions and explains how proactive IROPS planning can assist airports to adhere to regulations and enable them to quickly escalate from normal operations and deescalate from disruptive situations.

IROPS Causes

Explores the major causes of IROPS and the different situations that can trigger an IROPS event.

IROPS Effects

Outlines how IROPS events affect key stakeholders in the Air Transport System (ATS).

Stakeholder Needs

Describes the needs of industry stakeholders during an IROPS event and how we can mitigate the effects of an IROPS event through proactive communication and coordination.

IROPS Challenges

Explores the main challenges faced by air transport system stakeholders when managing IROPS events related to effective planning, communication and coordination.

Unified Customer Care

Discusses how airports can optimise their IROPS Readiness by effectively planning for three key phases of an IROPS event and explains how to establish Unified Customer Care during Irregular Operations by developing a cohesive action plan.

Coordination and Regional Networks

Explains the importance of developing coordinated solutions and the benefits of establishing regional networks when dealing with IROPS events.

Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM)

Introduces Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) and how A-CDM can assist in mitigating the effects of an IROPS situation.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
